Trekking at Its Peak: Susie & Bill’s Epic Adventure in Northern Pakistan

What do you get when you mix two curious American travelers, a seasoned Pakistani guide, three cheerful drivers, a lineup of historic sites, and a whole lot of breathtaking mountains? A story worth telling!

Join Susie and Bill, a warm-hearted couple from the USA, on their unforgettable 20-day journey through Northern Pakistan, guided by the ever-smiling Rizwan Sial, and supported by a cast of colorful characters: Munir, Kashif, Nadir, Mr. Zia, and Mr. Yousaf.

Day 1: The “Almost Wrong” Welcome – Islamabad to Skardu

Rizwan was already at Islamabad Airport two hours early—because punctuality is his superpower. But identifying Susie and Bill among a group of sleepy international travelers was another story.

After a near mix-up involving another friendly American-looking couple, Rizwan finally found the real Susie, who was calmly reading on her phone. Her dry reply? “Don’t you dare take my guide!” Instant connection!

They were escorted directly to the domestic terminal thanks to some VIP coordination with PIA staff. A short scenic flight later, they touched down in Skardu, with Munir waiting outside, ready for adventure.

Their first pit stop? A delicious breakfast at GLAMP, a cozy scenic spot set up by Rizwan’s friend Fahad. Just as they were sipping coffee with a view, Rizwan’s phone rang—it was the CEO checking on a guest complaint that no one had received them in Islamabad. Rizwan chuckled and reassured him: “Susie and Bill? They’re loving every minute!”

Day 2–3: Khaplu & Machlu – Apples, Tea, and Marriage Talk

After reaching Khaplu, the trio explored old mosques, hiked to Thoqsikhar, and feasted on fresh apples and roadside tea while discussing Pakistani marriage traditions.

Susie, ever the curious traveler, asked how couples marry without dating. Rizwan gave her a mini sociology lecture over club sandwiches, explaining family arrangements and 7-day wedding marathons. She was fascinated—and a little envious of the food traditions!

In Machlu Village, they met Sultan, a local porter who invited them to his home for lunch. Susie was blown away by the hospitality and the delicious local dish Prapoo with apricot oil. Her verdict? "That was the best chicken and pink tea combo I’ve ever had!"

Day 4–6: To Shigar – Chilly Vibes & Hot Springs

Driving to Shigar, Susie still remembered the apples and asked for more. Unfortunately, the exact same kind weren’t available, but Rizwan promised better fruits ahead.

In Shigar, they visited historic mosques, Blind Lake, and dined on local dishes. Susie wasn’t feeling her best one night, but a hot cup of tea and some laughter soon lifted her spirits.

Day 7–9: Gilgit & Minapin – Buddha, Bazaars, and Glaciers

They reached Gilgit after a long scenic drive, rested, and then hiked to see the famous Kargah Buddha. Susie was fascinated by the ancient rock carving, while Bill joked, “That’s older than my back pain!”

The bazaar buzzed with life—spices, handicrafts, and lots of bargaining. Susie proved to be a pro shopper.

Onward to Minapin, they admired the mighty Rakaposhi and hiked to Hapakun and Tagafari. Rizwan managed to keep everyone hydrated, entertained, and well-fed with trail snacks and hot lunch.

Day 10–13: Hunza to Duikar – Forts, Fairy Tales & Sunsets

In Hunza, they toured Altit and Baltit Forts, learned about the royal history, and explored the charming Karimabad Bazaar.

Then came Duikar, home to perhaps the best sunset views in the entire region. They hiked to the viewpoint and watched the sun kiss the mountain peaks. Bill, usually a quiet observer, whispered: “Now this... this is why we travel.”

Day 14–17: Gulmit, Glaciers & Goodbyes

In Gulmit, the couple explored Borith Lake, trekked to Passu and Batura Glaciers, and even crossed the iconic Hussaini Suspension Bridge. Bill tried to act brave; Susie was already halfway across before he stepped on!

The kids in the nearby villages waved them goodbye with big smiles and tiny hands. Susie found herself emotionally moved more than once—especially by the sincere kindness of the locals.

They drove back to Gilgit, taking in Attabad Lake and local trout for lunch, and reflected on how much they had seen and felt.

Day 18: Back to Islamabad – Modern Meets Ancient

With Kashif driving them to the airport and Nadir receiving them in Islamabad, the transition from mountains to city life was smooth. They visited Faisal Mosque, Shakarparian, and even squeezed in some shopping.

Day 19: Taxila Time Travel with Mr. Zia & Mr. Yousaf

The duo took a half-day trip to Taxila, guided by the history-loving Mr. Zia and Mr. Yousaf. From ancient Buddhist relics to tales of Alexander the Great, Susie and Bill were glued to every word.

Bill whispered to Susie: “I think Rizwan’s jealous. These guys are stealing the storytelling spotlight.”

They capped the day with a farewell dinner filled with laughter, reflection, and promises to return.

Day 20: A Bittersweet Departure

Their flight day arrived. Bags packed, hearts full, and a thousand memories later, Susie and Bill said goodbye to their guide-turned-friend Rizwan and the dream team that made it all possible.

Reflections from the Road

Pakistan, with its majestic peaks, heartfelt hospitality, and deeply rooted traditions, left Susie and Bill transformed. From sipping tea with porters in Machlu to watching sunsets in Duikar, their journey was filled with joy, wonder, and connection.

And as Rizwan always says, “Travel isn’t just about the places you go—it’s about the people you meet.” They shared the pictures of their family dressed up in the shopping which they did in Pakistan.
